5 Most Common Questions About Seeds. – My Secret Garden

Seeds can get expensive, especially when you’re an addict like me. It might just be because I buy too many though. I’m going to answer a few questions people usually ask before shopping for seeds. Since gardening season is just around the corner, and I am seed shopping as well, I thought I would answer some of them in one go.

Before you get started.

  • You may want to figure out which USDA zone you live in to find if the plant is compatible for your area.
  • Find out what soil type you have so your plant can be placed in a suitable environment to thrive.
  • When choosing seeds you’ll want to know if they are annual (replant ever year), or perennial (grows back each year.)

Should I buy seeds or get plants from the garden center?

I would probably say do a little bit of both. Starting from seed can be challenging sometimes. It does take practice. There has been many times my little plant babies have died or got way too leggy. So I just whined a little bit, then participated in a moment of silence, for a little wasted time and a good learning experience. I would think about what I could have done better, on my way to the store to adopt some nice little plants.

Depending on the time of year, it may be too late to start from seed and if you want to harvest from a plant that takes longer to mature. Some places don’t have a long enough growing season for the plants life span. That is why people will start the seeds early in their home or in a green house, or buy starter plants. To give it a couple week head start on the growing time, so the end of the plants life can be spent giving you food. The last thing you want to happen is you planted a little too late, a frost comes and it didn’t produce for you before the deathly freeze.

I actually already started indoor planting using seeds from a red bell pepper I ate the other day. I just planted in a small lot placed plastic bag over and sat in window seal. I already see sprouts
