On Nationalism and History: Poems by Fahmida Riaz and Sri Sri

Nikhil, etc.

“Three Dynasties” by Indian painter MF Husain, depicting three empires that ruled South Asia: the Mughals, the Mauryas, and the British.

If you’ve been watching the news recently, you may be aware that tensions between India and Pakistan are at an all-time high, following a terrorist attack on Indian military forces in Kashmir, Indian strikes in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, and Pakistan’s capture of an Indian pilot. I’m not here to offer any political analysis, but something I have noticed on Twitter and other social media is jingoistic, hypermasculine nationalism, calling for strong military responses on both sides.

Caught in the middle, as has been in the case for too long, are the voices of Kashmiris — the people who are most affected by conflict between these two nuclear powers. Let’s not forget that Kashmir is the most militarized region in the world, and for decades Kashmiris have been unable…

The Power of Process Automation: The Linchpin to Digitization and AI Adoption by Daryl Eicher

PaaS Community Blog

“How we respond to the opportunities and challenges of the outside world now determines how much the outside world values us.”

– Seth Godin, Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?

The Future of Digital Workforce Automation

I think about the future of work in the intelligent enterprise a lot. I have two brilliant kids just entering the workforce and a bright three year old. I’m always amazed by their creativity, resilience, and engagement in the mashed up real and virtual worlds they were born into. Disruptive technologies such as process automation with RPA and conversational AI offer the hope that my kids will never have to cut and paste across devices, apps, and reports.

Less mechanics, more design, faster time to market. That’s what scales. Orchestrating dynamic interactions among employees, intelligent bots, and robots is the quickest way to build your digital workforce.

In this segment of our podcast series, we discuss…

Psychopathic US Senator Openly Calls For Maduro To Suffer Gaddafi’s Fate, by Caitlin Johnstone

STRAIGHT LINE LOGIC

Anyone who called for Marco Rubio to suffer Gaddafi’s fate would probably be arrested on the spot. From Caitlin Johnstone at caitlinjohnstone.com:

Influential US Senator and 2016 presidential candidate Marco Rubio has tweeted a blatant death threat and incitement of violence against Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro. As of this writing the post has 13 thousand shares and counting.

The tweet consists of a “before” and “after” photo of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, who in 2011 was mutilated to death in the streets following a US-led NATO intervention in Libya which was launched on false humanitarian pretexts. The first photo depicts Gaddafi alive and confident with a smile on his face, the second depicts him covered in blood following his capture by a militia group minutes before his death.

The Age of Tyrannical Surveillance: We’re Being Branded, Bought and Sold for Our Data, by John W.

STRAIGHT LINE LOGIC

The only data corporations and the government don’t want is that which is purely trivial, like how much belly-button lint you gathered last week. From John W. Whitehead at rutherford.org:

“We know where you are. We know where you’ve been. We can more or less know what you’re thinking about… Your digital identity will live forever… because there’s no delete button.”—Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt

Uncle Sam wants you.

Correction: Big Brother wants you.

To be technically accurate, Big Brother—aided and abetted by his corporate partners in crime—wants your data.

That’s what we have been reduced to in the eyes of the government and Corporate America: data bits and economic units to be bought, bartered and sold to the highest bidder.

Those highest bidders include America’s political class and the politicians aspiring to get elected or re-elected. As the Los Angeles Times reports, “If you have been…

The socialist menace

Fully Myelinated

A couple really good columns on this a couple weeks ago.

First, Jamelle Bouie:

Next came the president’s address to Congress. And this week at a rally in El Paso, Tex., Trump went after the “radical left,” blasting a caricature of progressive climate policies. “I really don’t like their policy of taking away your car, of taking away your airplane flights, of ‘Let’s hop a train to California,’” he said, bizarrely adding that under the Green New Deal resolution introduced by liberal Democrats, “You’re not allowed to own cows anymore.”

The clear expectation is that many or most Americans will recoil at any hint of “socialism,” either on principle or because of its association with Venezuela, which the administration has tried to elevate as a major adversary. That might have been true in Trump’s cultural and political touchstone, the 1980s, when Ronald Reagan’s hard-line anti-Communism defined American foreign and domestic policy…

U.S. Navy ships pass through strategic Taiwan Strait, riling China

Tiananmen's Tremendous Achievements

February 26, 2019

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States sent two Navy ships through the Taiwan Strait on Monday as the U.S. military increased the frequency of movement through the strategic waterway despite opposition from China.

The voyage risks further raising tensions with China but will likely be viewed by self-ruled Taiwan as a sign of support from the Trump administration amid growing friction between Taipei and Beijing.

The movement comes as U.S. President Donald Trump said the United States and China were “very, very close” to a deal to end a months-long trade war that has slowed global growth and disrupted markets.

The U.S. Navy’s passage through the Taiwan Strait also came just days before a summit between Trump and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.

“The ships’ transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” the U.S. Pacific Fleet said in a…

A writer's touch

They were in a bottomless pit
A demon with broken teeth began to drum
And all the other demons echoed
Deception and deception
In a moment a lady called worldliness and immorality took the stage
The reddishness of her lips
Was more inviting than Adam’s apple. Youths, even the old shook their waist
Dancing to the music of hell

Anger came suddenly to the stage
And unforgiveness held his hand like a newly married couple
Jealousy hurried up to the stage
Cause she had eyes for anger
And they began to sing
Causing the world to sin
With a melody that made the world to dance vigorously
Dancing to the music of hell

No one knew that drunkenness could sustain a note
Until he ended the note
And all the drunkards kept nodding their heads
To his meaningless songs
Lust hid herself in a secret chamber
Whispering into many hearts

Daily Graces

Our base parish has been so thankful these past two weeks. Last April, our active duty priest assigned to our base retired and we have been without an assigned priest since then. A very kind priest from town has been coming to help fill in, but has to basically fly in, say Mass and then zoom straight back to his parish to make the times work. We were grateful for the gift of the Sacrament, but there wasn’t much time for pastoral care. After much prayer, a civilian priest volunteered to come fill the void and his homilies the past two weeks have been very, very good.

His main point this week was so good, I had to take a minute and share it with you all. He asked us a question at the start: “In all our readings today, there was a man before God. Was he chosen, though…

Write Along with Me

I had a health scare last week that slapped me, once again, into awareness that I’m alone. I no longer have a husband; I no longer am married. After 56 years, I no longer have someone at home who’s there for me the minute something goes wrong.

There have been many challenges as I’ve assumed this role of widowhood, but they’ve been doable. Mostly. I’ve not finished yet with collecting tax documents, and that’s stretching my sanity; I much prefer working with words than numbers.

This health scare, though, was not doable, alone. The doctor’s office called that I needed to have a repeat mammogram. In my 77 years, I’ve never had to have a repeat. You can imagine where my mind went—all the way from the repeat test itself to the grave.

I had to have an immediate talk with myself. I could not deal with wild thoughts alone…

Number of UAE expats prepared to spend a fortune for a second passport surges 30%

Multicultural Meanderings

More on citizenship-by-investment and the incentives for expatriates in the Gulf who have no pathway to citizenship to pursue options:

There has been a huge increase in the number of wealthy expatriate residents in the UAE who are willing to spend hundreds of thousands to millions dirhams in exchange for a second passport — and the privilege to travel the world freely — despite allegations of fraud against some immigration firms.

In 2018, requests made in the UAE to obtain an alternative citizenship went up by 30 per cent compared to the previous year, according to Citizenship Invest, a Dubai-based company.

The bulk of these applications are from Asian and Middle Eastern nationals residing in the UAE, with Syrians topping the list and accounting for 14 per cent of total demand.

Many Pakistani nationals are also interested in acquiring residency rights from other countries, with their applications accounting for 12…

HMVC – Hierarchical model–view–controller

Acordo Coletivo: Cidadania

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to navigationJump to search

The structure of an application with PAC.

Hierarchical model–view–controller (HMVC) is a software architectural pattern, a variation of model–view–controller (MVC) similar to presentation–abstraction–control (PAC), that was published in 2000 in an article[1] in JavaWorld Magazine, the authors apparently unaware[2]of PAC, which was published 13 years earlier.

The controller has some oversight in that it selects first the model and then the view, realizing an approval mechanism by the controller. The model prevents the view from accessing the data source directly.

Example[edit]

The largest practical benefit of using an HMVC architecture is the “widgetization” of content structures.[3] An example might be comments, ratings, Twitter or blog RSS feed displays, or the display of shopping cart contents for an e-commerce website. It is essentially a piece of content that needs…

One day I’ll be Queen of England vows Boris Johnson

Writing in his Daily Telegraph column, the famously ambitious Johnson, said: “I can conceive of no earthly reason why I should not be made Queen after the death of Her Majesty.

“I went to a good school, my Latin is at least on a par with Rees-Mogg’s, and even if I do say it myself, I have a certain regal bearing.

“I can’t see there being any objections from the royal family, to be honest. In fact, they’ll probably welcome my ascension to the throne

“It will give William the chance to go back to flying helicopters and Harry will be able to concentrate on getting rat-arsed and shagging that fine-looking colonial filly he’s shacked up with.

CHOCOLATE FOR YOUR SOUL WITH SHERI ROSE SHEPHERD – TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2019

From The Darkness Into The Light

In Light of Our Imperfections
by Sheri Rose ShepherdYou are the light of the world– like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see. Don’t hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all. – Matthew 5:14-15

The first time I was invited to speak came from a woman who had totally humiliated me at the dinner table in front of my husband’s Bible professors. There I was, already intimidated by the educated people at the table, when one of the woman at our table said loudly, “I heard you were fat, Jewish, and on drugs. How did you ever become a Christian?” Of course all eyes were suddenly on me as I felt forced to share my life story in front of a table of strangers. I am not proud of my life before Christ…

Obstetrics and Gynecology not limited to only Pregnancy

A doctor specializing in gynecology is not only known for providing the right treatment and care for women through their phase of pregnancy but also for assessing and examining the female reproductive system or any parts in the female anatomy related to the same in cases other than pregnancy as well. Therefore the need for a gynecologist can arise at any hour of the day.

Savera Society For Human Initiatives

On 11 February, the United Nations, partners worldwide, women and girls will mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Why does it matter?

Recent studies suggest that 65 per cent of children entering primary school today will have jobs that do not yet exist. While more girls are attending school than before, girls are significantly under-represented in STEM subjects in many settings and they appear to lose interest in STEM subjects as they reach adolescence. Debunking the myths that girls do not like the sciences and other and gender stereotypes, along with investment in teacher trainings, gender-responsive technology and innovation can reverse these trends.

With Sustainable Development Goal 9, part of the Global Goals that world leaders agreed to in 2015 with a deadline of 2030, countries around the world have pledged to “build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation”. Yet, a look…

Answers and Promises, Day 4

From The Darkness Into The Light

Today’s reading is drawn from Joel 2:12-13 and Joel 2:18-19.

Observation

Often an answer from God will come packaged and delivered in a promise — as something potentially available. That is how God dealt with his people through the prophet Joel. He answered their pleas with a call to return to him so that he could make good on promised blessings.

Application

We’d rather the answer come in concrete form — fully assembled and ready to use, with a full guarantee. But God has spoken more than 7,000 answers to our problems and questions in promise form. So how do we get these answers wrapped in “potential packaging” to become reality? God gives his answers in potential form because his greatest goal for us is not making us comfortable, it is building our characters. He makes promises reality, not through obligation, but through obedience. God’s promises are converted from…
