From The Darkness Into The Light

Matthew 21:14–17

Pride has traditionally been regarded as the greatest of all sins — and with good reason. Those who are puffed up with themselves are too proud to admit their failures and need of God. The proud become so concerned with maintaining their own prestige and power that they reject new ideas or information. Consider your life today and see if pride defines your character. Work to put any pride in your own abilities to death that you might not reject the Savior.

Read Philippians 3:12–14

The apostle Paul urges us to follow his example as he presses forward toward his goal and allows nothing to block his spiritual progress.

Blocking Our Hearts

If we are to guard our hearts against potential spiritual blockages, it is important to know what those blockages are.

  1. Boredom. We must remain bold and adventurous on the faith journey if we want to keep our relationship with God fresh and dynamic. We must never think that we have arrived, for the moment that we do this, we become stagnant and complacent. Instead, we must always fervently seek after the heart of God.
  2. Familiarity. To keep our hearts alive and vibrant, we need to maintain an attitude of gratitude and thanksgiving for who God is and all that he has done and continues to do. When we remind ourselves of the fact that we owe him everything, including our…

How Do I Know if God Hears My Prayers? Billy Graham’s Answer

From The Darkness Into The Light

By Billy Graham      Topics: Prayer

Man praying

Q: How do I know God even hears my prayers? Sometimes it’s as if He’s turned a deaf ear to me. I’m beginning to wonder if it’s even worthwhile praying.

A: One reason we know God hears our prayers is because He has promised to hear them! Even if He doesn’t always answer the way we think He should, He still hears us. The Psalmist declared, “As for me, I call to God … and he hears my voice” (Psalm 55:16-17).

Why then, does God sometimes seem deaf to our prayers? One reason may be because we’ve allowed sin to take root in our hearts—and sin always cuts us off from God. It may be anger, or hatred, or prejudice, or an unclean habit, or anything…

BE A GOOD STEWARD OF YOUR TRIALS

Therefore, among God’s churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.2 Thessalonians 1:4

The Apostle Paul praises the church in Thessalonica for their faith and love in the face of persecutions and trials. In essence he is telling them that they are good stewards of their trials, not letting them impact their faith negatively.

I recently heard gospel singer Lynda Randall express this same thought of “being a good steward of the trials I face,” as she introduced her next solo “It is Well With My Soul.”

The lyrics of this hymn were written by Horatio Spafford, a lawyer of some prominence in Chicago. He and his wife Anna had one son and four daughters, and were good friends of D.L. Moody and Ira Sankey for many years. Mr. Spafford’s children had come…

Transforming the social world

From The Darkness Into The Light

That’s the secret of Jesus. You watch Jesus, and you see he never did “withdraw” and then “attack.” All of the time people wanted him to do it and in many ways, but he would not. Then to the body of believers, he said, “This will show everyone that you are my disciples if you love one another,” but he had already said, “Love one another as I have loved you.” So that’s the model. In that sense, the transformation of the social world is at its heart the transformation of personal relations. That’s the key to transforming society in the larger arena. There is no cure for the social battles that we fight in our culture—and there’s so much grief around race, gender, and so forth—until you eliminate “withdrawal” and “attack” and replace them with “acceptance” and “help.” Once you do that and not just talk about it, these…

From The Darkness Into The Light

Whom Shall I Fear?

This devotional content is drawn from: Psalm 27

The LORD is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life—of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 27:1

Shortly after September 11, 2001, a good friend and U.S. Army Major was assigned to manage security at the airports in Iowa. I had occasion to accompany John as he drove to check on his troops throughout the state. During those hours, we discussed the threat of terrorism and how a Christian should respond. John shared that Psalm 27:1 was his way of handling fear.

When David wrote Psalm 27, he could not have known what his declarations of confidence in the Lord then would mean for many of us believers now. We see that there is a way to overcome fear. The Lord Himself is all we need. God…

Spiritual Heart Attacks

From The Darkness Into The Light

Read John 10:10

Our enemy Satan is a thief who wants to steal our lives, but Jesus came to bring us abundant life.

Unhealthy habits can often account for the breakdown of our physical bodies. For example, the more common causes of a physical heart attack are stress, a high-fat diet, lack of exercise, smoking and high blood pressure. By eliminating the potentially harmful behavior patterns that lead to blockages in our arteries, we can prevent a heart attack from ever happening. The best cure is prevention.

The same is true in our spiritual lives. We cannot ignore those things that cause a blockage in our spiritual heart muscle. Lack of spiritual health can cause us to leave our first love, which will eventually lead to a spiritual heart attack. Once we suffer such a heart attack, we find that our hearts no longer beat passionately for God or his…

“Smiling has always been easier, than explaining why you are Sad”

The Broken Specs

People think they know you. They think they know how you’re handling a situation. But the truth is no one knows, know one knows after you leave them, when you’re lying in bed or sitting over your breakfast alone and all you want to do is cry or scream. They don’t know what’s going on inside your head- the mind – the numbing cocktail of anger and sadness & guilt. They just don’t know. So you pretend & say you’re doing great when you’re really not. And it makes everyone feels better. But does it change your feeling? Your pain goes away? Your smile becomes genuine?

The answer is No,We all have chapters we would rather keep unpublished. Why you believe in faking a smile? Because its very tough for you to explain to each one of them, that how bad you feel, the nights which you cried and the loneliness.

Devotion Graphic

It was in those pages I internalized the message that acceptance and belonging would come when I was “just the right size.” Have you believed that lie? The dieting and beauty industries spend billions of dollars hoping that you do. The problem is that compulsive dieting creates an eventually mindset.

Eventually, when the scale reads a certain number, you will belong, you tell yourself. Eventually, when your jeans reach a certain size, you will feel loved.

Thankfully, God reconciled all eventuallys on the cross.

Ungodly Lifestyles
“For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God.” (2 Timothy 3:2-4)

The warning in the previous verse to our text for today insists that “perilous times” will characterize the last days. This list describes the types of people who will dominate the last days, and it is frightful.

The “self love” of these people is demonstrated by internal motivations driven by the sin nature. Such people will be “covetous”; the Greek term means “fond of silver.” They will also be “boasters” (braggarts) who revel in their sinful behavior. That boasting is driven by a “proud” spirit that is arrogant, willing to show off gaudy ostentations of their conquests…

He was the popular one, the guy everyone liked to hang out with, the one who was a lock for being voted “Most Likely to Succeed.” But instead of taking advantage of all these advantages, he decided to spend his time chasing girls and partying, to the dismay of his parents and the ruin of his GPA.

It hasn’t always been that way for me, I haven’t always loved the Bible. I guess you could say there was a day when I hated the Bible. I hated it because of the demands I thought it placed on me. I had no idea that it was in the Bible that I would actually find freedom from the bondage that sin and the law had placed on all of us. Now don’t take this the wrong way, I’m not saying that we can do whatever we want without ramifications. I am saying that the word of God produces a change in us that could be a self fulfilling prophesy. God’s word places a demand and then enables us to fulfill that demand and actually like it. The Future of Decisions

“How to live in a world where profound uncertainty is not a bug, but a feature?”

In a Wired UK excerpt from his new book 21 Lessons for the 21st Century, bestselling author Yuval Noah Harari argues that we must teach our children how to develop the mental and emotional flexibility to navigate decades of unprecedented change.

[Schools] assumed that as long as we give students lots of data and a modicum of freedom, the students will create their own picture of the world, and even if this generation fails to synthesise all the data into a coherent and meaningful story of the world, there will be plenty of time to construct a good synthesis in the future. We have now run out of time. The decisions we will take in the next few decades will shape the future of life itself, and we can take these decisions…

An Unshakable Kingdom [1]

Graham's Space

Kingdom Truth is poorly understood today as many preachers still think it’s about heaven and have preached the gospel trying to get people converted by entering the Straight Gate; oops no, the Kingdom of God is on earth and occupied by those who obey the principles of King Jesus, the Sermon on the Mount – this is the greatest synopsis of the King’s requirements, keeping them is walking the Narrow Way – and sure – few there be that find it! – who loves their friends, let alone their enemies?

The mediocrity, powerlessness and barrenness of most churches show that few understand let alone enjoy the Kingdom; the barrenness and paucity of their testimony prove it.  Let’s consider Hebrews 12 and this ‘unshakable Kingdom’, let’s read these fantastic verses – Instead, you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God (the heavenly Jerusalem), to myriads…

The Bible is full of people whose greatest delight was to praise God. Many Psalms were written for that sole purpose and it must have been an amazing sight to see Solomon’s Temple filled with people singing their praises to Jehovah; it took away the breath of the Queen of Sheba! Perhaps it was Psalm 145:1ff – I exalt You, my God the King, and praise Your name forever and ever. I will praise You every day; I will honour Your name forever and ever. Yahweh is great and is highly praised; His greatness is unsearchable. One generation will declare Your works to the next and will proclaim Your mighty acts. The popular saying “All that glitters is not gold” is old advice that is still of much relevance today. If all that glitters is not gold, could we also say it is not all gold that glitters? As precious and costly as Mr. Gold is, why does he choose to come in his crude form? Is it a case of keeping his identity hidden or is it the case of staying hidden to those who wouldn’t take the pain or make the wise decision of ascertaining his value?

Goldis not valuable because it shines or sparkles Even in its crude form, it still commands a hefty premium and maximum respect.” What makes it gold is not the furnace or the chemical processes. From landing at an airport to traveling to meetings and events and planning a dinner date on the other side of a city, most of us have been guilty of making arrangements during rush hour. And let’s face it, there are few things as frustrating as sitting bumper-to-bumper on a freeway in buses, taxis and rental cars. Metropolitan populations are on the rise the world over, which isn’t the most pleasing news, especially for commuters. US residents alone wasted around 41 hours due to congestion and gridlocks in 2017. Should you prefer to avoid traffic altogether then you might want to skip the following cities.

Bogotá, Colombia

Bogotá, Colombia
Colombia is ranked among the most congested countries on the planet, so it’s no surprise to find its capital city on this list. Add to this a lackadaisical approach to traffic laws and power cuts, which bring stoplights to a halt, and you’ve…

From The Darkness Into The Light

Offering intercessory prayer means nothing other than Christians bringing one another into the presence of God, seeing each other under the cross of Jesus as poor human beings and sinners in need of grace. Then, everything about other people that repels me falls away. Then I see them in all their need, hardship, and distress. Their need and their sin become so heavy and oppressive to me that I feel as if they were my own, and I can do nothing else but bid: Lord, you yourself, you alone, deal with them according to your firmness and your goodness.

Biblical Wisdom

Therefore confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of the righteous is powerful and effective.James 5:15-16

Disaster warnings as storm raises flood threat in 37 provinces

national August 10, 2018 01:00

By THE NATION

DISASTER WARNINGS have been issued as heavy downpours threaten to bring flash floods and landslides to 37 provinces across Thailand, and the Meteorological Department said yesterday.

A monsoon storm is predicted to increase rainfall in the Northern, Northeast, Central, East and South of Thailand until next Tuesday.

Among the at-risk provinces are Surat Thani, Chiang Rai, Ubon Ratchathani, Nakhon Phanom, Kanchanaburi, Lop Buri, Saraburi, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Krabi, Phuket, Phang Nga and Trang.

Surat Thani has already faced the wrath of floods, with soaring water levels. Hundreds of people along the Khlong Sok Canal in the province’s Phanom district are now living on the upper floors of their homes as floodwater, up to a metre and a half deep, rises below them.

The Life-Changing Magic of Getting In Line at 5AM

Longreads

Helen Rosner traveled to Tokyo on short notice and with no dinner reservations — and that means the best food requires waiting in lines. A lot of lines. Long ones. In an essay for AFAR, the die-hard line-avoider describes her gradual acclimatization to a country whose language includes the phrase gyouretsu no dekiru mise: “restaurants that have very long lines.” In the end, she found herself calmly waiting for more than a great bowl of ramen.

I was in Tokyo for the very end of actual sakura season, when the city’s abundant cherry trees bedeck the streets with a riot of pink. In anticipation, I’d packed a Canon A-1, a petite brick of a camera from the late ’70s that shoots 35mm film and runs about 50 bucks at a used camera store. I hadn’t photographed that way in years, and as I committed myself ever more deeply…

THE PROCESS OF PERSECUTION-3: INJUSTICE

From The Darkness Into The Light

In his humiliation he [Jesus] was deprived of justice.Acts 8:33a

Christians experiencing persecution are following in the footsteps of their master, Jesus. In Acts chapter eight, Philip revealed to the Ethiopian eunuch that the passage from Isaiah 53 he was reading referred to Jesus who indeed was deprived of justice. Today in the Western world, we would describe His trial before crucifixion as occurring in a “kangaroo court!”

If disinformation about any group, including Christians, is disseminated long enough, no one will help when that group or person is discriminated against. Discrimination relegates Christians to second-class citizenship with inferior legal, social, political and economic status. Once discrimination takes place, no one will intervene when the mistreatment comes.

Examples of such injustice against Christians abound around the world: ID cards in a country where Christianity is an unacceptable entry in the religion column; daughters abducted because they are Christians; expulsion…

For many years sporting enthusiasts had a limited number of options. We all knew them: baseball, soccer, football, basketball, golf, hockey, tennis, and a handful of other games that most people recognized and understood. These sports were not dangerous (unless the rules were broken). Then, in the 1980s and 1990s things began to change. A whole new generation of sports began to emerge. Out of the labor pains of a generation looking for a bigger rush and greater risks, birth was given to a class of sports that have been classified as “extreme.” “What would happen if I tied a bungee cord to my ankles and jumped off a bridge?” “Could I strap a snowboard to my feet, launch off a jump, do two flips, and still land without breaking my neck?” “Is it possible to take a motorcycle off a jump, slide off the seat, let the bike…

Franklin Graham: Pray for Boldness Amid Opposition in Blackpool, England

From The Darkness Into The Light

By Franklin Graham   •   August 6, 2018

Franklin Graham is planning to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ in Blackpool, England, this fall, despite opposition.

Dear Friend,

Blackpool, a city in Lancashire on England’s northwest coast, desperately needs a message of hope. But some in Blackpool are determined to prevent that.

For a large portion of the city’s population today, hopelessness is part of everyday life. A number of churches in Blackpool and the surrounding Lancashire area have been praying for their community for several years and extended an invitation to me to come hold evangelistic meetings in September.

I’m going to share the Gospel—a message that is the only hope for the world—that God sent His Son to take our sins, that Jesus Christ shed His blood on the cross for…

Rev. Graham Slams ‘Slanderous, Vile,’ Anti-Christian Attack on Pence by NYT

From The Darkness Into The Light

Commenting on a bigoted, anti-Christian commentary against Vice President Mike Pence by New York Times columnist Frank Bruni, evangelist Franklin Graham described Bruni’s remarks as “slanderous” and “vile,” and an “attack on all of us who believe in God and His Son, Jesus Christ.”

In the commentary, Bruni, who is openly homosexual and a militant promoter of the LGBT agenda, smears Vice President Pence as a “holy terror,” a “bigot,” a “liar,” and “cruel.” Bruni also Mock’s Pence’s Christianity, claiming that Pence believes “he’s on a mission from God” with a “determination to mold the entire nation in the shape of his own faith, a regressive, repressive version of Christianity. Trade Tump for Pence and you go from kleptocracy to theocracy.”

Bruni presents zero evidence to back up his tawdry claims.

Love, Pt. 4 – Love Declarations of Faith

Your Faith Has Made You Whole

Years ago I was watching the Believer’s Voice of Victory, with Gloria Copeland teaching on love. She was teaching from 1 Corinthians 13. She challenged her viewers to replace the word “love” with “I am” or “I”, and then declare it in faith.

When I declared it outloud, there were some things in 1 Corinthians 13 where I said to myself, “Yeah, right” (I knew that I fell short of living up to 1 Corinthians 13 in some ways). However, if you continue to confess 1 Corinthians 13 by replacing the word “love” with “I am” or “I”, those confessions of faith will take root. Your heart will begin to change, and the Lord will help you to grow in love.

Declare Aloud …

I am patient. I am long suffering. I am slow to anger. I am patient in bearing the offenses of others.

I am kind. I am…

Stop Asking Why – A Functional Rustic Approach

Functional Rustic

Stop Asking Why.png

Stop asking why. Seriously. Drop the word from your vocabulary entirely. You don’t need it. The world doesn’t need it. Stop asking why.

“Why are you wearing that outfit?”

“Why are you doing it that way?”

“Why do I feel like this?”

Because. That’s the answer to every “why”. It is always the same answer. What is the reason to ask the question if you already know that the answer is “because….(insert justification here)”.

No one likes feeling judged No one likes feeling judged. Back off and let people live. We’re all on some type of journey, all evolving and growing.

“Why are you wearing that outfit?”

I don’t know about you, but if someone  asked me “why are you wearing that outfit?” I am going to feel obligated to justify why my outfit is ok. The person asking the question isn’t stating my outfit is wrong, but their use of the word “why” forces…

Spiritual Path

Searching for Grady

We’re all golden sunflowers inside ~ Allen Ginsberg

We all search for love, for peace, for inner tranquility.  It’s only when we focus on being still. When we stop and listen.  Only then will we be able to hear this soft whisper encouraging us to make the choices that are best for our lives. We should visualize ourselves in golden light and embrace the energy of Spirit..

As Sunflowers, the sentinels of Summer, follow the sun so should we follow our spiritual path.  Our unique journey in our own way, in our own time.

How To Give Constructive Feedback

Research & Beyond

Some people seem to think that ‘feedback’ on work means pointing out everything that was done ‘wrong’.

These people have a very poor grasp of how their actions impact others, and the weight behind their words. I avoid them as much as possible.

Because it IS possible to give kind, constructive feedback! You just require a little emotional intelligence, and some forethought.

Consider how your words will be read, don’t just assume the recipient ‘knows what you mean’ unless you’re best friends who hang out for an hour a week for at least 5 weeks.
Very few editors and mentors can do this.
(Even with my own husband, who lives with me, I am careful with my feedback so there are no misunderstandings. The occasional one still occurs!)

The best way to give constructive feedback is to ‘sandwich’ your feedback. For everything you wish to correct, find something…

How to Use an Appositive

English Editing Services | Ediket

“I called my friend, JJ, to tell him about all our plans!” Have you seen sentences like this that re-state the subject? The part that’s offset by commas re-names the subject, giving more specific information. This grammar structure is called an appositive, and you can use it to introduce or clarify the topic you’re writing about.

How do you use them?

Appositives are nouns or noun phrases that tell more about the subject, so there are many instances in which they may be relevant. However, whether you should offset them with commas depends on whether the information is essential to the meaning of the sentence (restrictive) or just extra detail (non-restrictive).

If the restatement is restrictive and is needed to identify the right subject, then no commas are needed (yes to restrictive = no commas). If the restatement is non-restrictive, just extra information, then use…

So Long, and Thanks for All the Value Meals

Longreads

All that time you spent trying to find a Boardwalk game piece on your McDonald’s fries was a waste: between 1989 and 2001, “Uncle Jerry” diverted over $24 million in cash and prizes from McDonald’s super-popular “Monopoly” promotion. The loot went to friends and family members, drug traffickers and strip-club owners, psychics and convicts and Mormons — all in exchange for a portion of the winnings. Jeff Maysh unravels the entire massive conspiracy in a piece at The Daily Beast.

Inside Hoover’s home, Amy Murray, a loyal McDonald’s spokesperson, encouraged him to tell the camera about the luckiest moment of his life. Nervously clutching his massive check, Hoover said he’d fallen asleep on the beach. When he bent over to wash off the sand, his People magazine fell into the sea. He bought another copy from a grocery store, he said, and inside was an advertising insert with the…

In 1869, a neurologist named George Beard identified a disease he named neurasthenia, understood as the result of fast-paced excess in growing industrial cities. William James, one of the many patients diagnosed, called it “Americanitis.” According to David Schuster, the author ofNeurasthenic Nation (2011), symptoms were physical (headaches, muscle pain, impotence) and psychological (anxiety, depression, irritability, “lack of ambition”). Julie Beck, writing forThe Atlantic, observed that, among sufferers, “widespread depletion of nervous energy was thought to be a side effect of progress.”

Recently, there have been a number of disconcerting reports that one might view as new signs of Americanitis. A study by the Centers for Disease Control found that, between 1999 and 2016, the suicide rate increased in nearly every state. Another, from researchers at the University of Michigan, discovered that, over the same…

That Stranger on the Bench
CHRYSTAL EVANS HURST

“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.” Hebrews 13:2 (NIV)

A few years ago, my family took a road trip to Baltimore to visit my grandparents.

We never visit the city without making a trip to the Inner Harbor. It’s something my parents did with me, and I have great memories of it, so it’s something I love to do with my kids.

This area is a very popular tourist attraction. It’s also an area where lots of local folks from many different walks of life hang out.

On this particular day, we walked along the main thoroughfare. I stopped for a bit to glance in the window at one of the stores. I turned my eye every few seconds to make sure my…

How Can I Grow Closer to God?

From The Darkness Into The Light

2.9.2018

I’d love to tell you I have a long and impressive list of things I do every day to feel closer to God. But honestly, I just ask Him to renew me and shape me into the woman I need to be as I get into His Word. And I commit to following hard after Him, no matter what.

This helps me grow ever closer to God—pressing into Him so He makes the deepest impression on me.

In Luke 9:23b, Jesus tells His disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” His words seem surprising at first. The disciples had already given up everything to follow Jesus. Or so it seemed …

FACEBOOK: “Community Standards” Don’t Apply to Dark Web

Helena

With little fanfare or mainstream media discussion, Facebook has closed its doors to third party blogging which is coincidentally, mostly conservative.   As of August 1st, this new rule quietly went into effect.  Of course it does not apply to paid content which now dominates the newsfeed and has absolutely nothing to do with any user’s particular preferences.    However, even there, a precedent was established with the decision to permanently ban Alex Jones and specific pages from Infowars, therein the censorship of US MSM is officially initiated.

While smaller bloggers scramble to try and adjust to the rulings, the attacks will likely rise as Facebook’s “Community Standards” rules loosely define terms of ‘Violence and Criminal’, Safety, and ‘Objectionable Content’.   These terms are created by and monitored by Facebook and are not necessarily a legal demonstration of conduct.   Therefore, Facebook has nominated itself as the censorship police – which would…

Complicated Choices

As James held the map, his father pointed at the line that ran through Glacier National Park in Montana. “We’re right here—near Triple Divide Peak,” his father said. They’d stopped to get their bearings while backpacking along the Continental Divide Trail. Looking up, his father indicated a rugged mountain ahead of them. “There it is. An interesting place!”

James gazed at the mountain. “Why is it so interesting?” he asked as they resumed their hike.

“It’s the spot where two divides meet,” his father said. “We’re on the Great Divide. That runs north and south across the continent, through this mountain. The Northern Divide starts at this mountain and runs east. These divides determine which way rainwater flows. Water that falls on the summit of Triple Divide Peak can go in three directions. It can go west to the Pacific Ocean, north to the Arctic Ocean, or east…

God Makes The Ordinary Extraordinary

Sisters in Faith

Why did God choose Mary to be Jesus’ mother? Mary was no different from any one of us. She was not royalty, but an everyday person. If we know nothing else from Scripture, we know God selected everyday people to carry out extraordinary acts. All they needed to be used of God was a willing heart. Mary certainly had that. Do you call your children blessed and thank God every day that He blessed you to be their mother? That is your calling and who God made you to be. He put children in your hands who are destined for greatness in God’s kingdom. He called you to nurture their growth, help them to know their own callings, tend to their needs, cry for them in the dark times, and rejoice with them as God reveals Himself in their lives. Every child…
