‘STILL READS FROM CHITS’: DEVE GOWDA HITS BACK AT RAHUL FOR BJP B-TEAM TALK, HINTS AT JOINING THIRD FRONT

Deve Gowda said that Siddaramaiah was living in a fool’s paradise if he believed he would come to power again in Karnataka after heading the worst government.

Bengaluru: JD(S) national president and former Prime Minister Deve Gowda has ridiculed Rahul Gandhi’s suggestion that his party has a tacit pact with the BJP in Karnataka as the babble of a youngster.

In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18’s Deepa Balakrishnan, Gowda said that the Gandhi scion lacks leadership and still hasn’t understood JD(S)’s contributions in uplifting minorities in the country.

He was reacting to the Congress president’s allegation during an election rally on Sunday that his party, the JD(S), is the BJP’s B-team and any vote for anyone other than the Congress is as good as a vote for the BJP as the saffron party is out to grab power at any cost.

Here are excerpts from the conversation:

Q. How do you react to being called the B-team of the BJP?

A. Rahul Gandhi should first understand Karnataka politics. He was guided by local leaders of the Congress. He is still a youngster. Let us be frank, he still has a long way to go to develop leadership.

He must first understand what I have done for minorities as PM and as the CM of Karnataka. At that time, he was not here. He was studying abroad. He should at least ask his mother (Sonia Gandhi) about it.

He does not even know how to talk about a party that is headed by a former PM. He still reads the chits that are given to him by others. He is going to be belittled by people. He wants to give a certificate to me? I solved the Idgah Maidan dispute. I brought reservation.

Q. There is a national campaign underway to get secular parties together. Where is the stand of JD(S) on this?

A. There are two types of thinking, two approaches to fight the 2019 elections. One is anti-NDA or anti-BJP. People who subscribe to this feel all secular parties should come together.

Those belonging to the other school of thought want to build a front minus the BJP and minus the Congress. All other regional parties should come together to fight 2019 elections, that’s our position.

But now, I will confine myself to Karnataka. For the next 65 days, I won’t scratch my head about national politics. Till the assembly elections get over, I am totally concentrating on Karnataka. I won’t go to Delhi because every minute is precious for me.

After that I will take a call on what stand to take to protect the interest of the nation. There won’t be any personal interest or gain in that decision. I have already been PM. I have no political ambitions. I want to see country free of communal and fundamentalist forces who are out to break the nation.

Q: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said he wants to defeat your family members this election.

A. Who is Siddaramaiah? Who has grown up under me? He has helmed one of the worst governments in the state. There is no law and order here and corruption is rampant. If he thinks by giving some advertisements he can overcome all these deficiencies, he is living in a fool’s paradise.

Q. But he wants to take you on in your home town of Hassan?

A. He has already taken me on in Hassan. Let him. He has taken a call. Let us wait for the results.

Q. If there is a hung assembly as is being predicted, who will the JD(S) go with?

A. There is no question of going with anybody. We will sit in the opposition and function as a true opposition. The leader would be Kumaraswamy (his son).

Thiruvananthapuram: The opposition United Democratic Front stormed out of the Kerala Assembly on Monday after permission for adjournment was denied post a heated discussion on recent episodes of “police excesses”.

Former home minister and Congress MLA Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan had mentioned six incidents of alleged police brutality while dealing with the public in the last few weeks. He said that the police have been left uncontrolled under the Left government.

The discussion was prompted by an incident in Thrissur district, where cops manhandled a youngster, tore his t-shirt and tried to push him into their jeep. His fault? He had asked that a policeman be stationed at a busy junction as it was an accident hotspot. The entire incident was caught on camera and the cops had to face a lot of flak. The video also showed that the locals had gotten agitated and opposed the police’s thuggery.

Last week, an elderly person in Malappuram alleged that he was punched on the nose by a cop for not giving way to a VVIP vehicle. He said that he had pulled his car to the left and the Governor’s and the pilot vehicles had passed unhindered. But an ASI following them came up to him later and attacked without provocation.

In Alappuzha earlier this month, two people had died in a road accident when the police stopped a motorcycle for checking on a highway, using their patrolling vehicle. But as the checking was underway, another motorcyclist riding with his family rammed into the first bike, who was stopped by the police in a wrong location on the highway.

Addressing the issue in the Assembly, law minister AK Balan admitted that certain instances have taken place. “There have been specific instances of police excesses but that cannot be generalised across the force. Strict action will be taken against those found guilty… The law and order is in safe hands in the state,” he said.

But the reply failed to assuage the opposition camp. “The situation is really bad and police high-handedness is increasing. Proper action is not taken against officers who are resorting to such high-handedness. Even after repeated circulars from the DGP the situation is not changing,” said Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala.

Shatrughan Sinha Says Lalu ‘Victim of Conspiracy of Circumstances’, Meets Yadav Family

Patna: Dissident BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha met the family members of Lalu Prasad in the city, a day after visiting the jailed RJD president at a hospital in Ranchi where he is being treated.

While Sinha called on Prasad on Saturday after a CBI court handed him 14 years’ jail term in a fodder scam case, he travelled to Rabri Devi’s 10 Circular Road residence in Patna on Sunday to meet her and her sons.

Photographs of Sinha with Rabri and her sons — Tejashwi and Tej Pratap Yadav — figured prominently in newspapers and social media much to the discomfort of the BJP whose leaders have been attacking the RJD supremo on corruption charges.

Sinha, who has been at odds with his party leadership ever since he was ignored in the 2015 Bihar polls, defended seeing Prasad and his family, saying it was a “personal” matter and was about his “sanskar” (values).

“For me, it’s like once a friend always a friend,” he told PTI today. “It is my principle not to consider political opponents as enemy.”

He asserted his meeting should not be seen through political prims. “I went to meet Prasad and his kin to be with the family in this hour of crisis.”

Sinha had some kind words for the jailed RJD supremo also, who he said was a “victim of conspiracy of circumstances”.

“I hope he (Prasad) will get justice sooner or latter,” he said.

The BJP MP from Patna Sahib also sought to blunt criticisms that might come from any quarter for his meeting.

“If my meeting is taken as a sin what about the prime minister attending the wedding of Lalu Prasad’s daughter or the wedding of Congress leader Digvijay Singh’s daughter and wishing Sonia Gandhi during a personal encounter?

“This (his meeting with Prasad and his family) should be seen in the same light. When the time comes we may talk politics also … No problem,” he added.

“I have never crossed the Lakshaman rekha (limits) of my party. I always maintain discipline”.

He praised Prasad’s sons saying Tejashwi has a very “bright future” and that he was impressed with him. “About Tej Pratap Yadav do not try to underestimate him also.”

“Akhilesh Yadav (Samajwadi President) and Tejashwi Yadav are people to be watched out for,” the senior BJP leader said.

Tejashwi, who is the Leader of Opposition in Bihar Assembly, also tweeted about the meeting.

“Indomitable, the original Bihari Babu and stalwart of Indian Cinema & Politics Sh. @ShatruganSinha Ji came calling to show solidarity with us! He is appalled by #VendettaPolitics being meted out to fiesty @laluprasadrjd Ji! He always stands for genuine & honest friends.”

His brother Tej Pratap Yadav also tweeted. “A great selfie with Shatrughan Sinha ji.”

“Standing with us as a guardian in the fight against feudal government, many many thanks to Shatrughan Sinhaji,” he added.

CPM Submits Fourth No-confidence Notice Against Modi Govt After Congress, TDP & YSRCP

New Delhi: As the Parliament logjam entered the 15th day, the CPI(M) on Monday submitted a notice of no-confidence against the BJP-led central government in the Lok Sabha, the fourth party to do so after the Congress and two Andhra Parties.

Parliament will resume its sitting on Tuesday after a three-day recess amid indications that the logjam may continue. The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha are due to adjourn sine die on April 5.

On Friday, the Congress moved a no-confidence motion against the government in the Lok Sabha, days after the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the YSR Congress adopted a similar measure.

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has so far said she cannot take up notices for the no-confidence motion against the government as the “House was not in order” amid protests by members of different parties on various issues.

The leader of the CPI-M in Lok Sabha, P Karunakaran, submitted the notice to the Lok Sabha Secretariat on Monday and urged the Speaker to include the no-confidence motion in the revised list of business for Tuesday.

“Under rule 198(b) of chapter XVII of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Lok Sabha, I hereby give notice to move the motion of no-confidence in the council of ministers in the House on March 27, 2018. I request you to kindly include the motion in the revised list of business,” the notice says.

According to the Left MPs, the notice is part of an opposition strategy to step up pressure on the NDA government in the Lok Sabha.

The two parties from Andhra Pradesh had moved no-confidence motions against the government over what they called the latter’s failure to honour the “promise” of granting special category status to the southern state and seeking a special financial package for it.

The government has said that it is ready to face a no-trust motion.
